Secondary Roots
| Secondary or branch roots of plants form in the region of maturation above
the root tip. Branch roots form when areas of the pericycle, a specialized
layer of cells just inside the endodermis that maintain their ability to
divide, start to function as the apical meristem of the new branch root.
|
| The new branch root then breaks through the endodermis, cortex and epidermis.
The branch root maintains a connection with the vascular system of the root
where it originated allowing for the efficient movement of water and nutrients
from the roots to the shoot. |
