Secondary Roots

Secondary or branch roots of plants form in the region of maturation above the root tip. Branch roots form when areas of the pericycle, a specialized layer of cells just inside the endodermis that maintain their ability to divide, start to function as the apical meristem of the new branch root.
The new branch root then breaks through the endodermis, cortex and epidermis. The branch root maintains a connection with the vascular system of the root where it originated allowing for the efficient movement of water and nutrients from the roots to the shoot.

This microscopic image show the branch root starting to break through the epidermis and cortex.
